Shown in the following pictures and text are ten steps to making
jewelry using the fabrication process.
Step 1: Design & Layout
Dave designs the wearable art jewelry to be made by the fabrication
process. This design will be a two-layer sterling silver belt buckle with
14K gold enhancements.
Step 2: Hand Engrave Design
The drawing is hand engraved using centuries-old method of hammer and
special chisels called "gravers".
Step 3: Saw Out Design
The design is sawed out with fine blade jeweler's saw.
Step 4: Preparing for Soldering
Soldering requires both pieces be absolutely clean and a flux applied.
Then giblets of solder are placed on the back of the top piece and melted
forming a thin covering. Then they are placed together ready for sweat
soldering.
Step 5: Silver Soldering
Sweat soldering is accomplished by heating the two pieces until the
solder melts and the two pieces move together. Silver melts at 1760
degrees and the solder melts between 1300 and 1500 degrees depending upon
the type of solder.
Step 6: Filing and Sanding
The clean up starts with filing. Then sanded from 600 grit working up
to 2000 grit sand paper for semi-finish.
Step 7: Scroll Engraving
The scroll engraving is laid out in proportion before hand engraving.
The finish work involves scroll engraving around edges and detail
engraving in other areas.
Step 8: Gold Enhancements
Gold enhancements are engraved and cut out from 14K sheet gold and
then soldered to jewelry.
Step 9: Findings and closures
Findings and closures are silver soldered into position for the
wearable art.
Step 10: Completed Belt Buckle
The completed belt buckle with Arabian horse and 14K Gold Roadrunner.
